Commercial chill stores…
…are substantial warehouse facilities whose strict temperature control requirements mean that they tend to consume large amounts of electricity. Rising utility power costs have left chill store operators striving to stay competitive by looking for ways to save costs. One of the solutions is likely to be found by “blue sky thinking” – literally, looking to the sky above the chill store rooftop.
Plenty of unused roof space and heavy on-site electricity consumption are two of the most important indicators that installing solar panels on the roof will yield major savings on energy bills. While commercial rooftop solar installations currently attract both government sponsored Feed-in Tariff (FiT) and grid export payments, the most cost efficient way of using the clean energy generated is to use as much of it as possible on site.
Generation matched to chill store demand
Potato grower and supplier AKP Group opted to install a 193 kWp rooftop solar PV array at a new headquarters and chill store in North Lincolnshire. The system now generates 160,500 kWh of electricity per year, which is fed directly into the chill storage unit. In a perfect match of supply and demand, the chill store gets the extra power it needs to keep produce fresh when it most needs it, i.e. when the sun is strongest. The system reduces the facility’s carbon dioxide emissions by around 96,000 kilograms per year.
Energy Efficiency Financing
The AKP Group project was financed via the Energy Efficiency Financing (EEF) scheme, a joint initiative between the Carbon Trust and Siemens Financial Services (SFS) that provides businesses with finance for energy efficient equipment. BELECTRIC UK can offer a range of alternative arrangements for financing commercial solar rooftops, including a zero-cost option on equipment, construction, operation and maintenance, achieved through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
Supply chain credentials
With an increasing number of retailers choosing to promote their environmental credentials, members of their supply chains are finding it beneficial to establish their own. Solar rooftops are a great way to achieve this. Clean, green solar electricity will not only reduce your utility bills over the operating lifetime of the PV installation – typically over 25 years – but will reduce your carbon footprint and boost your environmental standing across the same extended period.
